Joel McKinney lives in Walnut Grove, MN. He works as a sculptor, jeweler, painter, and multimedia artist. He has also worked on ceramic tile murals, covering a wide range of styles and material usage. His paintings and sculptures are often abstract and neutral in color. The Minneapolis Institute of Arts sells his jewelry. In 2005, he set up the cupolette for the Wyoming Art Council. Additionally, he set up the Coyote Cupolette for USD and started the South Dakota Iron Pour.
